DTP Toner Darker

Solvent-based aerosol spray for making screen printing film positives from laser prints. When you print a screen positive from a desktop laser printer, the toner deposit is often too thin to fully block UV light during screen exposure. Fine for looking at, not dense enough for stencil-making. DTP Toner Darker's solvent partially dissolves the toner particles and re-fuses them into a denser, more opaque film that blocks UV far more effectively.

How to use it right

Let the freshly printed positive cool completely. Spraying hot toner can smear the image. Hold the can 20-25cm from the film surface. Apply a light, even mist. One thin coat, let it dry for 30 seconds, then assess. Apply a second coat if needed. Two light coats outperform one heavy coat every time. Use matte polyester laser film, not plain OHP transparency. Matte film accepts and holds the toner and spray far better. Work in a ventilated area because the solvent fumes are strong.

Watch out for

Heavy application is the most common mistake. Too much spray dissolves the toner too aggressively, causing it to spread and blur fine detail. It can also warp thin film stock. Always spray light and build up gradually. Don't spray on dye-based inkjet positives because this product is made for laser toner only. Don't use on photo paper or glossy film. The solvent attacks the coating. And always let the print cool first. Hot toner smears.

Storage & handling

12-18 months in a cool, dry place. It's an aerosol, so don't store above 50°C or in direct sunlight. Don't puncture or incinerate the can. Standard aerosol safety applies.

Common Questions

What's the difference between a reducer and a thinner?

A thinner is pure solvent. It cuts the ink's viscosity by diluting everything: resin, pigment, additives. Your ink gets thinner but also weaker. Less opacity, longer cure time, reduced durability. A reducer is a formulated additive that lowers viscosity while maintaining the ink's balance. It typically contains some of the same resin system as the ink, so it reduces body without stripping out the functional chemistry. Think of it this way. Thinner waters down your coffee. Reducer makes it the right temperature without changing the recipe. For professional printing, always use a matched reducer, not a generic thinner.

How much reducer can I add before it affects print quality?

Depends on the type. Curable reducer (contains the same resin system as the ink), 5-15% is the safe working range. At 15%, you'll notice the ink running more freely through the mesh, which is usually the goal. Straight plasticiser reducer, maximum 3%. Plasticiser softens the ink film permanently, so even 5% starts compromising wash fastness and durability. If you find yourself needing more than 15% curable reducer, the ink is probably too old, too cold, or the wrong product for the job. Adding more reducer isn't the fix. Bring the ink to room temperature first, then add reducer incrementally until the flow feels right.

Is DTP Toner Darker for making my laser printer print darker?

Not for regular printing. DTP Toner Darker is a spray specifically for screen printers who make film positives using a desktop laser printer. The toner deposit from most laser printers isn't dense enough to block UV light during screen exposure. This spray fuses the toner particles into a denser layer so the positive blocks UV properly for stencil making. If you just want darker regular prints, you need to adjust your printer settings or replace the toner cartridge.

What kind of gum do you sell?

Gum arabic solution for offset lithographic printing. It's a natural resin dissolved in water that protects non-image areas on offset printing plates. Printers apply it to plates during storage and between print runs to prevent oxidation. This is a printing trade chemical, not adhesive gum or chewing gum.
